Bronco Mendenhall on the Jim Rome Show

BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall appeared on the Jim Rome show this morning. For those who didn't have a chance to listen in, let me summarize a few points for you. There's a link to the interview at the bottom of this post.

  • This was a "missionary opportunity" for Bronco more than it was a chance to get the football program some publicity. He spoke about missions, married players, honor code, the aims of the church/university, etc. He did a really good job explaining the specific type of player that BYU attracts.
  • When asked about players getting cocky from reading press clippings, Bronco referred to the "pride cycle" and that his players are well aware of it and have given trainings on it in team meetings since the UCLA game.
  • He also said that there is no other type of young man that he would rather coach than those at BYU.
  • When asked about the Jake Locker excessive celebration penalty, Bronco said that if he had disagreed with the official's call he would have declined the penalty. Yes, you read that correctly.
  • He also pointed out that BYU blocked the kick and would have blocked it from anywhere.
  • Several times Jim Rome commented that he doesn't normally keep guests on so long, but because it was so good he kept asking Bronco questions. Thanks Romie.
  • Mendenhall used the term "position mastery" only once.....2 times fewer than my pre-interview estimate.
Overall it was a really good interview. Bronco did a great job of representing the school and team. He focused on BYU's unique players and situation and put it in a very positive light. It was a great 10 minutes of national air time for the school, church, and program. Well done Bronco.

My favorite part was when he mentioned the pride cycle. At first it came out as if Rome should know exactly what he was talking about, it is however a common subject form primary on up, but then he realized what he had said and explained the pride cycle. I think he should have quoted 4th Nephi. I'm kidding of course.

I really enjoyed the interview and can't wait for it to be posted on 1280 so I can hear it again.

Bronco speaks like non other football coach in the nation. He sounded more like a philosopher then a coach! He represented the football program, the school, and the church very well.
It's true that your regular Joe Shmo football player off the streets can come and play here (except if your name is Mcmahon or Chambers). Bronco is looking for dedicated, smart, and upstanding players (and of course talented sorry Chris Carter)

Thanks for posting this.

When talking about the UW game . . . again, I get annoyed that no one ever discusses how disappointing it is for grown men to state that it's not important to follow rules. Rules apply to other people, but:
• my team is down,
• this call is going to cost my coach his job (like the other 30 losses wont)
• my team statistically does not deserve this win
• my team has not come close to 11-2 in the last two years
• my team has not gone undefeated in conference the last two years, but . . . . . . in spite of all this, the rules do not apply to us, at this time. Therefore, we are entitled. We deserve the win (not the tie. . . . . the win).

What does this say about leaders and men?

It's just not honest.
